    Summary

    “Joshua...” CJ drawls casually.

Something in the tone of her voice sets off every alarm bell in Josh's head. He narrows his eyes, sitting back. “…what?"
“I got some... interesting... reading this morning.”

His wariness intensifies. It's the way she said 'interesting' that gets to him. That tone implies trouble, but of what variety, he's as yet unsure. Josh leans back in his chair, still watching her like a hawk. "...whatcha got there, Ceej?"

    “Oh, just a little piece on...women's health…”

    Bookmarker's Notes

In which Josh’s girlfriend is refreshingly honest about perimenopause, CJ is merciless, Donna is playing along, Sam is earnest, Toby has seen it all before, and Josh might be overreacting just a little.

I’m crammed into a burrow so small that my knees are up around my ears and the boom mike keeps slamming into my head, inhaling the potent scent of toffee-apple brandy and trying to drink a talking mouse under the table.

The picturesque village of Buell, Maine is one of the last in the United States to continue the tradition of the “harvest” or “prosperity” lottery. Its residents insist the lottery makes them stronger, even as condemnation from outsiders grows.

    “Sometimes I wonder…” Morse began.

    Thursday looked to him, expectantly.

“Sometimes I wonder what I would have done if you had come to me.”

    “Christ,” Thursday said.

    Summary

Peter Jakes can hear opera music which means one of two things: he has just moved into the flat next to a serial murderer or he has just moved into the flat next to Morse. (He's not sure which would be worse.)

You can always tell when a case is going to be a big one just by the way Morse reads the incident report, something in the way his head cocks to the side like something isn’t quite right and before you know it there’s three more murders, two accomplices, no witnesses, and several instances of police corruption. In the wide and varied opinions and experiences of Peter Jakes, the look on Morse’s face now – mouth wrinkles deepening to icy crevasses, eyes hard and thoughtful, pen stopped clicking – this is a Morse case.

Peter can pick it up too. Four bodies, a note, DeBryn heading to the scene now – It’s a big one. It thrums in the dust dancing in the sunbeams through the window, smudges up against Morse’s ink stained hands, rattles the blinds, fumbles in the silent choke of his cigarette smoke swirling dizzily up to the ceiling. It’s a big one.
