“It’s only the things I love that die, Rip, never me,” she says. He hears the self-recrimination in her voice through his thundering pulse. “Come to think of it, I’m surprised you’re still standing. Guess God isn’t done punishing you either.”
It’s laid out there, brutally honest and yet still subtle enough to take a moment to sink in. The way she talks has always been like that; why mean just one thing when you could mean two or three, or four? I love you, is what she’s saying to Rip. I love you and it’s damaging. I love you and it’ll doom you.
I love you and I’ve known it all along.
