By a curse or a blessing from the Valar, Bilbo finds himself repeating the same horrific day of war outside of Erebor again and again. His repeats are always triggered when someone from the company falls. He suffers days and days on his own before the others begin to repeat the day with him.
One would think that with the whole company, an elf king, and a bowman all knowing what was to come, Bilbo would have an easier time getting them all through the day alive.
One would think that, wouldn't they.

"To be honest, Thorin did not take much notice of the company’s burglar, Master Baggins, in the beginning of their quest. He was a flash of red jacket when Thorin looked behind him from time to time to check on the rest of group, he was a muttered complaint about his uncomfortable saddle, and he was an extra mouth to feed when they camped down for the night. In short, he was like the axe you carried to cut down a tree: heavy and ungainly as you walked there but mighty handy when it came to the cutting. And Thorin had resigned himself to carrying this axe all the way to Erebor.
But one evening, somewhere on the road between Hobbiton and Rivendell, Thorin couldn’t help but notice Bilbo – and one part of him in particular."

CRASH! Bilbo’s head shot up from where he was sorting the paperwork and in an instant, he was running from the study. He barely made it into the living room when he froze and gasped.
Fíli was on the floor in a crumpled heap next to the low table. Bilbo hurried to his side, kneeling down on the cold stone floor. He pulled Fíli into his arms and shook the prince as carefully as he could, eyes going wide at the bleeding gash on his forehead that was staining blond locks deep red. Fíli didn’t stir, he didn’t wake.
“SOMEBODY HELP!” Bilbo screamed, holding Fíli as close as he could.
