Summary
James’ fourth summer on Long Island was shaping up to be much like the three before it.
Charter yacht captain James Fitzjames has been ferrying around rich tourists in Montuak for four summers and still hasn't been made partner in the operation. It might be bearable, if only the locals were a bit kinder to him, especially that damn captain of the commercial fishing boat, The Terror

Summary
Crozier foolishly believed that the first Magpie case he was consulted on would be solved by the time supper was ready. He swept into Sir John Barrow’s opulent home, been directed to the man’s private collection, observed the empty space where prized swords once hung, the letter pinned in their place, the feather that had fallen to the floor.
“You’re not looking for a magpie, gentleman,” he announced in that tone which had prevented his advancement at Scotland Yard ) as he held the feather between his thumb and forefinger. “You’re looking for a peacock.”The Magpie, dashing gentleman thief, has been running rampant all over London, robbing society of their treasures and delighting the masses with his daring and charm.
Private Detective Francis Crozier intends to stop him.

Thomas kneels in the half-light of the chapel, his prayers dissolving into a single, forbidden truth: he cannot tell where God ends and Vincent begins.

Summary
“Cardinal,” Pope Innocent said without looking up. He was signing something, slowly. “Sit.”
Lawrence sat.
“I need a favor,” the Pope said. He didn’t sound tired, exactly. Just past the threshold of fatigue into some stranger, steadier state.
Lawrence waited.
“There’s a visitor,” the Pope went on. “He believes he’s here for an audience.”
Still, he didn’t look up. Just turned a page, signed again, then closed the folder and laid the pen down with the kind of care that made Lawrence nervous.
“Bellini can’t take the meeting. I won’t.”
A pause.
“You will.”
(In which Lawrence speaks on the Pope’s behalf, and learns that being heard can be its own kind of closeness.)

Summary
Benítez tilts his head a fraction closer, conspiratorial. “It’s a pity our devices have been confiscated for the time that we’re sequestered here. I would’ve suggested sneaking off to exchange more music recommendations since you’ve demonstrated taste.”
“Dally any longer, and I fear that neither of us will be in anyone’s good graces,” Thomas replies as Ray sweeps past them. “But I would’ve…” He glances furtively at Benítez; for an instant, it’s the thrill of misbehaving at seminary again. “I would’ve liked that.”
“There’s a computer in the office.”
“We’d have to cross Sister Agnes.”
“Ah. Never mind that idea, then.”
Oh, the things I would’ve liked had we been young men together, Thomas thinks wistfully as they approach the dining room. I would’ve liked you.

Bookmarker's Notes
The speed by which they get together is precisely what they need. These are old men, they can't afford the time, so better get on with it.
The craft is done so meticulously, too, and the dream team is delightful.ETA: I bookmarked it when it only had 1 chapter. Since then, this has become my comfort fic. In times of trouble, which are many, I read this to as a self-soothing strategy.
