Summary
In the way that Mukai is always there—that is, she doesn't notice his presence as much as it gnaws at her when he isn't there—it feels almost inevitable that she would run into him like this. Mukai stands in the same aisle as her, book in hand. To run into him on her birthday feels like two worlds colliding without permission. They're on friendly terms, of course, coexisting easily in the same friend group, but there is another version of them that is messier. It's the version of them that has exchanged harsh words, and catalyzed each other to change, and come uncomfortably close to seeing each other too clearly.
Standing before him, Mika feels like an exposed nerve.
