"It's weird," she said truthfully. "Everyone's a million years older than me."
"Yeah," he said with a horribly insincere grin as blood trickled down the side of his face. "And they'll never really get it. Quynh was a hundred by the time Andy found her. Joe and Nicky died together. And then there's us."
Everyone else is very old and paired off, so Nile decides her cohort needs to unionize. Any good union comes with benefits, even it takes you both ten years to be ready for all of them.

Because once a week, he had the house entirely to himself from nine am to eight at night while he had his usual day off at the library and Robin was in class all day (and Eddie was on tour). He didn’t need the run of it, of course, because Robin would actually kill him if she found out he was engaging in sex acts in the kitchen — but it was nice to know he could be, like, loud and shift if he needed to.
(That, actually, might have been the only other thing Robin judged him for, but, in his defense, he grew up alone in a big ass house — he never really had to learn to be quiet.)
So he took advantage of it, and put on some pretty clothes and imagined some guy railing him in them.

“Thought you’d be out celebrating. What brings you to my neck of the woods, hm?”
Steve huffs and collapses onto the bench, tipping his head back to rest against the bend of Eddie’s knee, shoulder blade pressed against the solid warmth of his thigh. “The hell do I have to celebrate?”
Eddie shoots him a flat look. “Really? You’re asking the super senior what you should be celebrating with that in your hands?” He stretches his hand forward and Steve meets him halfway, handing over his diploma wordlessly.
Eddie hums, smoothing his hands over the leather casing, tracing the letters with his fingertips. “What’s freedom taste like, Harrington?” He wonders honestly, and it’s a real genuine question but it grates.
Steve grinds his teeth so hard his jaw aches and takes another pull from the bottle. The beer is lukewarm, cheap shit he’d never buy, but it’s refreshing in ways it shouldn’t be. Steve pretends that doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that it’s Eddie’s.
“Same shit it’s always tasted like.”

Billy doesn’t die at Starcourt, but he thinks about it a lot over the months that follow. Mostly, he thinks about how much easier it would have been to do so. No physiotherapy, or pain, or his dad’s haunted, confused gaze like he isn’t sure if he’s grateful Billy lived or not.
Billy doesn’t die and Stevie doesn’t leave and one of those things is worse than the other but both are bad, because Billy is different from before. A worse version of the worst version of himself.

“Where’s yours?” she asks. Gestures at Bob’s empty hands and arms and neck.
“Where’s what?”
“Your bijouterie,” she clarifies. “Does your family do waist chains or something? My mom says she got me rings because that’s what they do back home, but I think they’re too flashy.”
His bijouterie is not hidden, because he doesn’t have any. But Bob doesn’t want to say that, can already feel the shame coloring his face pink.
“Um, no,” he stutters. “It’s just on my ankle.”
His ankle, of course, is empty.
