   Summary

   At first, it’s what they do because their mothers say so. Vera and Vicky get together once a week to drink out on the porch, talking too loudly about their woeful lives, leaving their children huddled awkwardly together on the Palmer’s sagging couch. Van is an energetic child, restless and fidgeting as Natalie sits rigidly on the edge of a cushion. Finally, the redheaded girl can’t seem to take it any longer and explodes onto her feet, a whirl of energy.

   “Do you want to watch a movie? We have tons of movies,” she says as she drops to her knees by the television, pulling a shoebox rattling with VHS tapes out from under the cabinet. She rifles through them as Natalie creeps cautiously closer, crouching down beside the other girl.
