“What are these?” Yuna hears Ilya ask. He’s standing with his back to her in front of the armoire next to the couch, looking up at the shelves. She’d been on her way back into the living room with after-dinner coffee when she’d paused at the threshold.

Shane steps toward the armoire, coming up behind Ilya and curling both arms around his waist. “Um, trophies from when I was a kid. Like, minor hockey leagues and tournaments and stuff.”

Ilya moves his head from left to right slowly, scanning the array of trophies and medals on the shelf. “Is big business? Making meaningless awards for tiny hockey players?”

“They aren’t meaningless,” Shane protests, but he sounds a little sheepish.

“Yes, I’m sure the…” Ilya leans in close to read the plaque on one trophy, “‘Sportsmanship Award’ for the U7 Snowflake Classic was very prestigious.”

Shane rolls his eyes, but he’s laughing. “They don’t have awards like this in Russia?”

Or: Yuna bonds with Ilya, one plastic trophy at a time.

“Mm, not stuff his pockets with the drug everyone thinks makes you gay right before a press conference? Maybe!” Ilya’s voice chimed happily from the phone.

“You wanna tell us why you’re so acquainted with Rush that you can identify it in 780p, Ilya?” Kip asked.

“…I have so much leather to deodorize, Kip Grady. So many sports cars, you know.”

    --

Kip can't believe no one else can tell how outrageously gay Ilya Rozanov is, but he's not complaining, he's happy to have someone else to talk to at all the hockey functions.

Or: Perfect gaydar haver Ilya Rozanov finally gets a taste of his own medicine. A series of looks into Kip and Ilya's friendship, starting after the cottage.

“Wait, Mr. Raiders fan,” Rozanov calls.

    Constable Sullivan pauses.

“I get a phone call, yes?”

“Sure.” He pulls out his own phone. “Do you know the number?”

Rozanov nods. The numbers all come out in a rush, as though he’s memorized it in one long string and can’t think of any of them separately.

It’s a Montreal area code, the constable notes, as he types it in. As the phone rings, he puts it on speaker and asks Rozanov: “Who is it?”

    “Shane Hollander.”

“Fuck off. Who is it really?”

Or: in the midst of the Rose breakup, the Raiders win a game in Montreal. Unable to do what he normally does after Montreal games, Ilya goes out to a club, gets super drunk, and ends up getting picked up by Montreal police for public intoxication. Sitting in a holding cell, the only number he can remember is Shane's.

“The fuck? What are you doing here?”

“I am wondering same thing about you.”

You’re wondering—you’re in Shane’s—what the hell is going on?”

“Close the door, please. Is cold.”

Shane gives Hayden the go-ahead to grab a package from his house—but Ilya flew in a day early as a surprise.

    Oops.

An alternate Hayden-finds-out story set the winter after The Cottage.

So Shane Hollander is, how do you say in English, a dirty little thief. A clothing thief, to be precise. Ilya can't say he saw that coming, but he also can't pretend he's all that mad about it.

His shirt looks good on his Shane. On Shane. On Hollander.

Right. His shirt looks good on Hollander.
