    “You’re always so serious, Homura-chan. Shouldn’t you get to relax a little, at least in your dreams?”

    Maybe that’s true, but Homura can’t help wondering if even this—this longing manifested into a dream version of the girl she loved and lost—is an affront to what Madoka gave herself to do. The identity that Madoka sacrificed, the life and family that no longer remember her… All of those are in service of Madoka’s greater purpose, her ultimate wish. Homura will spend the rest of her life fighting to honour that. But she can’t control what her heart yearns for when she sleeps.

    Her hands find Madoka’s, trembling where they rest against her knuckles. Madoka’s hands are so soft, warm, cradling Homura’s heart in between her gentle fingertips. When Homura tilts her head back and opens her eyes, she can feel the affection in that non judgemental gaze, even though she still can’t quite make out Madoka’s eyes.

    “You would say that to me,” Homura murmurs. “That you’d want me to relax.”
