Alex sat down and the swing rocked under his weight - back and forth, back and forth - and his breathing followed the rhythm. However, he failed to disengage the heart stuck in his throat, the anxiety that was growing slowly under his skin. So, he resigned himself to a nervous waiting, consumed in a succession of deep frozen breaths.
When Michael joined him outside - the shirt half unbuttoned, the tie shoved in a pocket and a bottle of champagne in his hand - Alex felt like he had waited too long and, at the same time, not at all.

It seemed to be the most important thing to do and yet it wasn't, Michael knew it. He knew that it was all in his head - the doubts and the obstacles created to be a perfect alibi if things went wrong.

Tutto il resto, il loro primo appuntamento di San Valentino, è già pronto, dettagliato fino all'ultimo particolare, organizzato con la stessa cura che riserva ai suoi progetti o al più delicato dei motori che gli sia mai passato tra le mani. Sarà romantico e sdolcinato e ridicolo e Michael non vede l'ora. Se solo riuscisse a capire quale biglietto usare e perché scegliere quello giusto sembra essere di capitale importanza. Non lo è, lo sa, è tutto nella sua testa, dubbi e ostacoli creati dal nulla, una specie di scusa costruita a priori, qualcosa a cui dare la colpa se le cose non dovessero funzionare.
Michael sbuffa - perché deve sempre complicarsi la vita da solo? -, afferra la penna, scarabocchia qualcosa sul biglietto rosso e poi lo piazza sotto la tazza di caffè di Alex. E aspetta.
