Summary
Look, Mike was aware of the goose. I mean, who wasn't? It's an inevitable fact for almost everyone; it'll waddle along one day, and guide (or, more accurately, viciously drag) you towards your soulmate, to your one true love.
Of course, there were exceptions, although they were few and far between. Some people don't want romance, so they never encounter it.
Some had their soulmates die far before ever encountering the goose, so all they get is a little mark on their shoulder, a reminder of what could've been. Despite what he tells people, he never got that mark after El sacrificed herself. Despite the hours, days, weeks, months, he waited, all he got was a blank shoulder.
He told the party he had it, told them that showing it off brought too much pain. Covered his shoulder, even wore a patch at the pool. He told himself it was because she was secretly still alive, and that he was covering for her. But he knew he was lying to himself. He knew she wasn't his soulmate.
He knew who the goose would lead him to.
He just hoped that it would hold out long enough, that it couldn't lead him to him.
