In City 17, history is a story rewritten, erased, and rinsed from memory with every drop of water swallowed down. You were born just before the suppression field rose, too late to remember freedom, but too early to stop longing for what you never got the chance to have.
You work in the Records Adjustment Bureau, shredding forbidden fragments of the past- documents, photos, names, etc... It’s easier than any hard labor you could have otherwise been assigned, but every day feels a little death as guilt for your designated position as a cog in the machine helps to destroy the past of your dying planet…
Thus, you listen…You offer comfort where you can to your fellow man. Not as an official “side-hustle”, of course. The Combine would never approve of most of the things you get up to in your little apartment. But for a few extra rations- you lend an ear… and maybe a hand to hold- albeit a clammy one… And for such a small price in return for the feeling of being human again- people come to you.
It was survival. Routine repentance for the sins you were forced to commit. Regularity…
