He had to blink once or twice, just to make sure. This was an image straight out of a dream, slender and tall, solid in appearance, pure and perfect. She walked towards him on her own two feet, her delicate fingers clutching the vaporous skirt of a dark dress with layers and layers of stars. It was a shimmery, low-cut and elegant mess of simulated fabrics and zircon, standing on glass heels and with her hair done in a bun, long dark silk gloves past her elbows and a beautiful, disarming smile.
He knew this was a holographic projection of some sort -there was a certain transparency to her pale human skin that gave away the illusion- but it might as well have been real.
At least, his brain was dazed enough to believe it was real.
The Master Chief’s only response, at first, was to swallow hard.

Really, it was all Runner Five's fault.
Sure, Sam was the one who organized the decoration runs, and he was the one who sent Jamie out to chop down the tree, and he was the one who arranged for the crane, but what did that have to do with anything? Who cared if he spent hours learning to make bows from scraps? That didn't matter. After all, it had been Five's idea.
Five's brilliantly amazing idea, Five's dangerous laugh, Five's unforgettable smile.
Really, how could he say no to that?Alternate description: Five and Sam plan a massive Christmas party surprise and the rest of the runners get pulled into the shenanigans. Lots of fluff and holiday cheer combined with nice action sequence.

Five stared at her. At the very least, this was a factual question. She could do facts.
“Yes,” Five said.
It was, technically, correct. She had finished her coursework. Well, she’d dragged herself through the power of caffeine, late nights, and screaming through her coursework. The screaming in PhD programs was impressively varied. There was screaming because it was 3am and she was never going to get to sleep again. Screaming because the coffee machine had broken. Screaming because in her sleep deprived state she’d impaled her foot on a rusty nail. Screaming (happily) because she’d gotten an article accepted for publication. Screaming inside her head at her life choices.
“Excellent,” Janine said, unaware of the list of screams Five was mentally compiling.

Abel was a small place, barely a thousand residents and holding steady, which made it extremely obvious when someone was trying desperately to avoid you. Sam would almost be impressed if it wasn't breaking his heart.

[“Hey, Five!” Maxine called out, over the sound of the treadmill, “You’ve got a visitor.” She reached out to draw the curtain back but before she could finish Sam’s heart had already dropped in his chest.
“Where’d she go?” Maxine asked in confusion. She looked behind her as though Five could have slipped past unnoticed but Sam shook his head and silently pointed. Above the treadmill the window, now open, let in a cool breeze.
“Oh man.” Said Maxine, evidently forgetting her tact, “She really is avoiding you.”

Before the apocalypse, there would be a WikiHow article about this. There was a WikiHow article about everything, after all, and if there was one to teach you how to become a civil war corpse, there would probably be one to teach you how to find a Christmas present for your best friend who you almost killed while mind controlled. It would have strangely drawn instructional pictures and lots of options and the whole process would feel much easier. But Rofflenet had nothing (Five had checked when Sam was out of the comms shack getting them watered down hot chocolate someone had managed to make) and Five was beginning to get desperate.
After Moonchild's death, Runner Five struggles with guilt and the aftereffects of mind control. Five searches for Christmas presents, control over her own mind, and security in her place in Abel. Her new family is there to support her the whole way.

Nova Heart, lived her life in fight our flight when the end of the world finally came there was no real difference, you know besides the living dead running around. She never truly had a family to depend on until coming to Abel Township.
Sam Yao believed he wouldn't be able to love again until a stranger falling out of a chopper showed up. Both very lost soul's come to depend on each other through each other's flaws.This is mainly canon to the story on the Zombies run app of course little side stories to make the character a little more mine.
