The Don had met her before the Great War when he’d been trying to sell extra virgin olive oil to the mom-and-pop eateries between Fifth and Sixth Ave in Koreatown. (Clemenza himself had nothing against a nice bowl of tteokbokki, looked like pasta, tasted nothing like it; sprinkle summathat scallion on top, now there was a meal.) Not only that, but they’d had a son (baptized, at least, sia lodato Gesù Cristo). And, what was more, the Don wanted him brought inside. Brought inside for what, exactly, he wouldn’t say: the Don was so tight-lipped it was amazing a cigar could even get in there. And Clemenza was to mentor the boy. Hudson, his name was. “Like the river?” Tessio had asked, bewildered; Clemenza had shrugged. Who the fuck knew. Good river, the Hudson. Had kept many of Clemenza’s bodies hidden over the years.

The owl stared with icy-blue eyes at Vincent, hard and unblinking.
The Queen murmured, almost to herself, “Only beauty, only one kind of beauty. Above all else, always. Call the elves what you want, but you can’t call them inconsistent.”

Together, they strip the corpses of fallen soldiers like scavengers, sending prayers of forgiveness to their respective Gods, and take what they can carry on two horses. Eilat is several weeks of hard riding away, and from there Yusuf is insistent they take a merchant ship to Aden. Nicolo soon loses all feeling in his behind and thighs. Yusuf continues to alight from his horse as if having awoken from a pleasant nap. “It’s all about rhythm,” he tells Nicolo, moving his hips to demonstrate. Nicolo contemplates killing him, for whatever good that will do.

Shane’s face creased in a smile. “You’re stinky, is what you are.”
“You like me stinky,” Ilya said, which he felt to be an incredibly fair point. “I’m hungry.”
“Don’t be gross,” Shane said, knocking the side of his head against Ilya’s gently like they were butting helmets on the ice. It was disarmingly endearing. I am so fucked, Ilya thought for probably the dozenth time in the last three days, and went to take a shower.
