Summary
“I’m just saying, you definitely don’t look old enough to have a teenager,” the dad says, nodding towards Chris again. “How old are you, kid? Fourteen?”
Chris is staring at him now, too, grip tight around his crutches. “Fifteen?” he says, but it comes out more like a question than a genuine answer. He’s just as confused as Buck feels.
The dad lets out a low whistle. “Seriously, man,” he laughs, talking to Buck again. “Fifteen? You look good. I bet your wife is jealous as hell, though. It’s like you copy and pasted yourself.”
Oh.
Oh.
“Oh, I’m not—” Buck starts, his brain finally catching up to this confusing conversation. “He’s not—“
The dad’s eyes grow wide. “Oh,” he breathes, wincing. “Oh shit, my bad. I just assumed—I mean, you two just look so much alike.”

Summary
“You know the dance to Honky Tonk Badonkadonk?” Eddie asks as Buck wriggles his way behind him to get to the dance floor.
“You know this song?” Buck teases and the rest of their friends laugh at them. Buck sticks his tongue out at them.
“I’m from Texas, I know a lot more than just the song.” Eddie pushes his long-empty glass out in front of him and leans back in his chair, eyes just barely visible under the rim of his ridiculous hat. There’s something in his gaze that makes Buck pause, something like a challenge. Buck has always loved a challenge.

Summary
“I- I remember putting burgers in the truck. I took some off of Chimney so he could help Eddie finish assessing a patient. That’s the last thing.”
“Okay,” Bobby says, then hesitates before adding, “What happened is that someone stole the truck while you were in there.”
Buck’s head snaps up, and he tries to peer around the edge of the seat and console to get a better look at the guy. This was definitely not the turn he saw his evening taking, all jinxes considered.

Summary
And there, Phillip's voice echoed in his head:“When you lose a child, you… you see him everywhere, in all the people he could have become, in all the lives he could have lived. It’s something you can never recover from, someone who can never be replaced!"
Because that was the point, wasn't it?
Buck didn't know how to be a son because he was never anyone's baby; just a reminder of what his parents had lost.
He knew that, but what scratched the walls of his brain was the annoying thought that crept under his skin and whispered the fateful question: did Bobby also see him as nothing more than what his kids could have been?
-
Or, If being someone's son meant living as a fallback, Buck was destined to die in someone else's shadow.
Bobby won't allow that.

Summary
Bobby would like the record to state that he did not intend to be this much of an asshole about it. Quite frankly, it had been an unforeseeable turn of events completely out of his control as long as you ignored the fact he had done it on purpose and enjoyed every second of it. Because Bobby Nash was not a spiteful man. He could, however, be a very petty one.
---
The Buckley parents happen to be in town around Buck’s birthday, and they let something slip about his non-existent baby box. Bobby decides to do something about it.
