He now appeared to be in an empty room, bound in chains at his wrists and ankles, and seeing an odd oscillation of two doors where there should only be one, which in his experience meant someone had done something to him that really ought to have killed him, were he not what he was.

The fabric beneath him is not. It’s not the slick, cool silk of his Master’s bed, or Odysseus’ cage, it’s… a little rougher. Woven, that was it. He’s laying on something woven.

The system worked. Zagreus, once he felt well enough to try again, saw neither boon nor blessing from Aphrodite. Shades would wave him one way or another, and he would listen. The boons offered from the other gods were all ones he recognized.
The first time he emerged from the Styx after a failed attempt, he was greeted by a heart-stopping moment of silence, and then a lot of deliberate conversations and absolutely no eye contact. Hypnos waved him in with a stuttering motion like he wasn’t sure he wanted Zagreus to see it. Achilles kept his head bowed, bending it deeper when Zagreus passed. Thanatos shifted awkwardly from foot to foot in such an out-of-character way that Zagreus wanted to scream at him.
(Sequel to "Still Here" and "The Love You Deserve", which all really ought to be in one story.)

Odysseus didn’t do it intentionally, Telemachus was sure. He was never awake, anyway. It was just that… Some nights, his father’s... penis would get hard.
