Neil Josten let his cigarette burn down to the filter without taking a drag. He let his cat senses take over, his elevated sense of smell magnifying the acrid smell of the smoke that reminded him of his mother. He heard someone fumbling with the locker room door and Hernandez's footsteps as he came to join Neil on the bleachers.

“Hey, Jean, come watch a movie with us,” Cat called. She poked her head into the study room where Jean was putting his textbooks away. He and Jeremy had just gotten back from getting their books for their classes. He’d had no idea what he was doing since he’d always had his books provided to him by the Nest. Jeremy had helped him figure out how to apply the scholarship money towards his books too. He was tired and all he wanted to do was hide in his room for a while.

Elodie scrunched her face up, glaring harder. “God, I hate you sometimes,” she muttered under her breath.
