Ariks Eshteross was dead.
Imogen took in where he lay, crumpled and bloodied in the hardly secluded coat closet just off the main hall. His weapon was only half-drawn from his hip. Not a dash of crimson on the blade.
“D’you-” Imogen cleared her throat of the lump that abruptly made itself known. “D’you think they’re still here?”
“My dear,” Laudna started, a too wide smile stretching over her face, entirely inappropriate for the moment but prompting Imogen to relax slightly. “I’m almost certain of it.”

Imogen works as a stablehand at the Eshteross estate, helping her father make ends meet. The morning of an extravagant ball held there, Laudna - a witch doctor, and Imogen's ex - shows up to attend.
Imogen deals with it just fine - she swears - but then Eshteross is murdered, the body count is rising, and nobody can be trusted. It's a race against time to avenge him and stop the culprit.
