Summary
Leaf Coneybear is smart. He's smart, he's smart, he's SMART, and that's so incredibly, very, absolutely exciting.
Sure, he didn't win the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee or anything, but he hadn't really expected to, and neither had his family. On the car ride over his dad had even prepped him on how to congratulate the in-ev-itable winner so he didn't look like a sore loser. And Leaf really, really, really means to. Honest.
It's just that... he can't really shove his way through the crowd to get to William Barfée-accent-aigu and actually say congratulations. Which is fine. He can just congratulate second place.
Or... he could, if Olive Ostrovsky wasn't standing right next to impossible-to-get-to-William-Barfée-accent-aigu.
Luckily, Leaf was smart enough to come in fifth. Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre it is.
