Doctor Jill Steinman was pacing, waiting on the arrival of the victims of yet another multiple vehicle accident. The ambulances had not yet started arriving and the emergency department was filled with staff preparing for the onslaught. As one of the head surgeons, the doctor was directing her group to take a moment to breathe, to let family know they'd be working late. Again.
"Help! Over here! She needs help!"
A quick glance at the patient's face stirred a memory. Did she know this woman?

He should have been there; chopping and blending, stirring all manner of bubbling pots, tossing flour over the countertops as he viciously kneaded dough, glaring a warning at each of them to stay out of his way, and then following it up with a soft smile. This was the time of year that Eliot Spencer spent all his time in the kitchen; preparing his heavenly creations, cursing and growling until every morsel, every crumb, fell into perfect submission. A Christmas culinary delight to present to his team.
This place and this time- his kitchen in the midst of seasonal chaos- was strangely where he was most at peace. In his own way, no words necessary, he was showing the team how much he cared. It was rare to see him anywhere outside the kitchen this close to Christmas. And he had missed the entire day.

The blue eyed chef had caught Jill's attention. Eyes closed, he was still, silent. He could have been sleeping, but she knew he wasn't. The man almost faded away into the background, almost completely vanished, except that the energy that seemed to radiate off of him in waves was impossible to ignore. The man was furious, Jill could tell, and it seemed to take all his focus to stay quiet and wait. What he was waiting for was a question she didn't want answered.
Jill had seen his type a lot. They were angry and violent, and generally accompanied by women who flinched a lot. Women with a lot of bruises. No matter how good of a chef he was, Jill decided she hated the man.
