I had a thought that the pale king saying "no cost too great" sounds kind of like a mantra someone would repeat to themselves to try and eliminate their guilt and ran with it. Well, jogged. I could go way father with this and might in the future.
The title is a reference to a song I've been listening to a bunch recently. Not all of the lyrics fit but the vibes the song has is the the vibes I kind of associate with the pale king.

She does not even remember the sign for I am sorry.
It takes Moon about a hundred cycles, maybe more, to learn to communicate with the local scavengers.
