Summary
Lena tried to imagine a young Kara Danvers brazenly marching through the Luthor mansion, unfazed by Lillian’s glare or Lex’s snide paternalism, stubbornly befriending an intensely lonely girl who tripped on the stairs because she carried a book to her face. The possibilities spun in Lena’s mind, endless and precious.
My world certainly would have been different, she thought, but looking at Kara’s profile, the woman’s steel blue eyes measuring the ocean’s expanse before them, her jaw firm and confident, golden curls beginning to fly loose from its tight bun, it felt like Kara was talking about the actual world, the stage of something much greater than the scope of Lena’s mere human life, and Lena’s eyes slid away.
“We should get moving,” she said.

After a day at the beach, some things come to light, and it's going to take a lot for Kara and Lena to come to terms with all the things they've done to each other.

Setting is broadly mid-season 5, except Lena has confronted Kara and turned to Sam for comfort; also, Sam is still mostly Kryptonian.

Inspired by @searidings’ i can't hold enough of you in my hands: Mxy continually snapping his fingers and changing location while Kara holds on tightly, refusing to lose the way to her love, reminded me of the ballad of Tam Lin where Janet holds on to her lover through his animal transformations, until he is restored to his former human self.
And it made me think.. what if in the Phantom Zone, you turn into a phantom that takes the shape of all your fears and regrets. And what if Lena finally finds Kara.. can she hold on?
Post 6x04 after Alex has forced Lena to give up Kara’s DNA sample in the name of the greater good. Lena has figured out another way into the Phantom Zone; now she just has to get Kara home.
