He doesn’t notice she’s bleeding until the sleeve of her shirt is dark with it.
“You get caught on somethin’?” he asks. They’ve been walking through the outskirts of the city and then towards Bill’s for a while without running into anything, so he knows it’s not from a fight, but he never saw her trip or anything that would cause an obvious injury.
“Huh?”
Joel gestures at her arm. He tries not to touch her too much – she’s a fourteen year old girl alone with a grown man she’s only known for a day. He doesn’t think it would be too comforting to her if he suddenly got overfamiliar.
“Aw, shit,” she exclaims.
Or: Joel and Ellie's growing bond, explored through injuries.

"What the hell happened, Bright?"
The apartment is dark but JT reaches out to flip on the lights as they pass through the living room and again once they move into the kitchen, illuminating the cozy space with a warm glow that reminds Malcolm just how cold he is.
"Caught a lead," Malcolm mumbles, but it's cut off by a groan as JT lowers him down into one of the wooden chairs that surround the small table tucked beneath the kitchen's single window.
"And you went alone?" It's obviously a rhetorical question because JT holds up a hand, forestalling any answer Malcolm might give. "Of course you went alone."

It's been over two decades, but there's no way Gil could ever forget. In the months after Doctor Whitly's arrest, Malcolm's mental health took a steep decline. The nightmares took hold and the little boy slowly faded into a spectre of himself, unable to sleep, to eat. Eventually he couldn't even talk. He'd lose himself completely on occasion, falling catatonic for hours at a time when his emotions got too big to deal with, when he finally reached the limit of what he could cope with, and then blew right past it.
It hurt to watch him like that back then, the scared little boy looking impossibly smaller somehow, like he'd curled into his body and tried to make himself disappear from a world he could no longer endure.
Somehow, it's even worse now.
