“Here’s to many more years as Cap, if you want ‘em,” said Sarah.
“Don’t want as many as my predecessor,” said Sam wryly, thinking of Steve’s frozen decades. “But I think I can do a lot of good with at least a few more years.”
Sarah hummed and smiled, but it was a thin smile. Sam narrowed his eyes at her. “What?” he asked. “What’s that look for?”
“Just wondering if there’s anything you want, just for yourself. Being Captain America’s a tough job, what’ve you got going on apart from that, what’re you doing just for Sam?”
Sam was doing plenty of things for himself, thank you very much, including but not limited to treating himself to a style makeover that had nothing to do with Bucky's own summer glow up. But as Sam and Bucky grew closer, Sam found it increasingly hard to deny that Bucky was something—someone—Sam wanted just for himself too. Even if Steve's return to their lives made Sam think that maybe Bucky wasn't Sam's to have.
