There is a reason the Soul Stone, of all the Stones, has remained hidden and unused for so long,” said Thor, disconcertingly solemn. “You know how high the cost was to gain it, to use it. It demands much, and from those who fail to provide what it demands, it takes much. You need only see the Stone’s current guardian to see that.”
From Thor of all people, this was a grave warning. Steve wasn’t about to let it dissuade him though.
“I have to try. I can’t give up on her, Thor. Natasha helped save the whole damn universe, I can’t—she deserves to have someone fight for her. If we could bring all the others back, then we have to—she should be here too.”
Steve had made the mistake of giving up once before. He wouldn’t do it again.

Summary
It's 10:34 AM on a Thursday morning when the Winter Soldier kills the GRC delegation leader in the middle of an international summit. He takes out every security agent who gets near him, maims most of the bystanders. He looks right into Sam's eyes as he raises a modified sig-sauer micro-rifle and shoots Sam directly in the middle of the star covering his chest.
When The Winter Soldier attacks an international summit and shoots Captain America, Sam Wilson is convinced Bucky Barnes had nothing to do with. He'll go to the ends of the Earth to prove it.
When Sam goes missing, Bucky runs a rescue mission, no matter what it means for his own health and safety.

Summary
Sam is no stranger to people hating him. In this line of business, it was common. In the skin he lived in, it was a given to being alive. Strangers yell at him in the streets, old ladies clutch their purses, enemies aim their guns at him. He had nearly fifty years to get used to it, how everyone seemed to hate him, how he had to walk on eggshells because one wrong step would undo everything he worked so hard for.
He’s used to pain. He’s broken more bones than he could count, bandaged more cuts than the clumsiest of people, and shoved more unwanted thoughts down than the guiltiest of soldiers.
Still, when the boy comes at him swinging, Sam is completely defenseless.
Sam heard once that if you repeat something enough times, it loses its meaning. He’s sat through enough briefings, survived enough missions, and buried enough bodies to know that they all blur together. He’s watched enough cities crumble to learn to forget they were there at all.
Get up. Get up. Get up. Keep getting up, even if you forget why.
