    Bookmarker's Notes

Tony started moving again, this time like a man possessed, infused with a different kind of rage now. It was filled with terror and desperation. He was sloppier than before, unable to ignore the sight of Peter on the floor actively dying in front of him, but infinitely more deadly.

He’d heard stories about mothers being suddenly able to lift cars off of their children to save them. He wondered if they felt like this.

He collided with the man in charge again, a scream of rage leaving his mouth. He’d never moved this way before, never fought so much like an animal in his life. But his kid’s life was on the line and he was going to suffocate if he wasn't quick enough.

    Summary

“I’m sorry for everything,” Peter choked out, voice breaking as he stood before the group, hands trembling and head down in shame.

“I know I’ve messed up. Just... Just give me a chance to fix it. Mr. Stark... please”

The Avengers exchanged glances, with expressions a mix of annoyance and pity.

“We’re tired of hearing apologies, Peter”

Peter’s heart shattered. He came to the painful realisation that his desperate searches for forgiveness might be in vain.

    OR

Peter's desperate pleas for forgiveness fall on deaf ears as the Avengers hold him responsible for a tragedy that was never his fault. Isolated and rejected, he battles in an agonising reality where his apologies seem never enough. In a world where redemption feels out of reach, he's left chasing forgiveness, drowning in his apologies -  with no one to pull him from relentless tides.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Tony Stark was not a man who easily let people in. He had built his life around walls. Walls of sarcasm, humour, and an impenetrable iron suit. He had mastered the art of hiding behind his persona, behind the smirks and charm. And yet, beneath all the layers of iron and arrogance, Tony cared deeply. Too deeply. That was his problem, it always had been. His heart, for all its metal reinforcements, was fragile in ways no one would ever know. Not even the team. Not even Steve.

It was why, despite all his best efforts, he found himself caring far too much about the kid .

Tony had vowed years ago he wouldn’t be anything like Howard Stark. Cold. Detached. Unreachable. He’d spent a lifetime making sure he didn’t become the man who had left him feeling small and worthless. Vowed to never let ambition or genius override what truly mattered: people. And yet, despite all the promises, despite all the years of trying, Tony could feel it happening. The way he was becoming cold, distant– pushing Peter away like Howard had once pushed him.

“Turn to the last page,” Bruce said. They were all around him now. There were hands on his shoulders and someone was softly massaging his neck. He breathed in their scent.

He turned to the last page and stared.

    It had been laminated.

“Doctor Banner has enchanted it with an impervious element,” Thor said.

“You won't be able to write on it, Tony,” Bruce explained. “Or more specifically, everything you write on it will be erased.”

Tony closed his eyes. “I don't think it's that easy.”

“No,” Natasha said, “there's nothing easy about it.”

“But we'll be here,” added Bruce.

Tony slowly opened his eyes. He brushed his fingers through the pages of the journal, looked at the worn leather for a long time, breathed in the smell of ink and regrets...

… and closed it, with a soft exhale.

Peter Parker should not keep drunk-dialing Tony Stark after midnight. But more pressingly, Tony Stark should not keep answering.

“No,” Rhodey says, “but—in that scenario, I was the kid making bad decisions, not the responsible adult.”

“Right,” Tony says, “I just don’t feel like I have much standing to say, you know, underage drinking, wag finger, bell of shame, don’t do it, kids.”

“I think you have exactly that standing,” Rhodey says, off Tony’s glass. “Kids make bad decisions, Tony. That’s why adults exist.”

“And I’m the adult,” Tony says, “in this scenario?”

Rhodey rolls his eyes. “You know damn well you are.”

“I pictured myself as more sort of the cool uncle,” Tony says, “like, you can’t talk about this with your parents because they’ll have a fit, so come to me, I’m the adult who won’t throw a fit but also will try to make sure you get out of it okay.”

“My parents never liked that uncle,” Rhodey says. “What do you think his parents will think about you?”

“His parents are both dead,” Tony says. He downs the rest of his bourbon.

    “Ah,” Rhodey says.

    “Touche,” Tony says.

Outside his window, the city hums. Peter presses the phone tighter to his ear and tries not to think about how long it’s been since Tony said good job, kid.
Somewhere in the city’s belly, something moves. Somewhere, something breaks. And Peter presses redial.

    Tony doesn’t answer.

Which is fine. Busy men have busy lives.

May was similar, always moving, always juggling too much, phone calls slipping through the cracks like loose change.

But still, every night he calls. Every morning too. Both men, just to make sure. Just to hear a voice that might remind him he’s not completely forgotten.
They don’t answer. Peter doesn’t care. He swears he doesn’t. He swears so hard his chest hurts with it.
