But Steve was shaking by the time they pulled up to the station. Drenched in a cold sweat that plastered his hair to his forehead and his sweater to his shoulder blades.
“Go grab Robin,” he said to Dustin. He was white-knuckling the steering wheel and he was far too pale. “Tell her I might need her to drive.”
Robin didn’t know how to drive, but it was a moot point, because Steve wasn’t getting out of the driver’s seat either. She opened the door and they looked at each other in silence, and then he said, “Get in.”
And he drove them back to his house.

Inexplicably, Steve's hand reaches out to touch the carved letters that don’t even spell out Eddie’s real name. “Fuck. Shitty first date. I mean, if you want it to be. Otherwise, it’s just a talk. Guess you’ll have to tell me sometime.” For a heartbeat, he breathes there, pretends, between inhales and exhales, that the scent of Eddie’s cheap cologne, something spicy and soothing, always mixed with earthy weed, twines into the crests of the wind.
Murmurs after a fashion, “I think he just misses you. And I miss you, and I miss him. And if you were here, you could roll your eyes with me and say something dumb, and I’d huff, and he’d groan, and we’d laugh. It’s all just... It’s all just broken now."

"And I'm sorry," his voice breaks, just slightly on that word, sorry, with how loaded it is.

Dustin realizes with certainty, at the end of the world, that if Steve dies, it'll still be his fault, because no matter how much he pushes Steve away, it'll never be far enough to protect him.

“I ever tell you ‘bout the time Mike jumped off this cliff to save me?”
“What?” Steve breathes, his footsteps stopping short. Just out of arm’s reach.
“It was that week Will was missing… Troy Walsh and James Dante came after us. Chased us through the woods. We’d just reached the quarry when Troy grabbed me and put a knife to my neck.”
Behind him, Steve inhales sharply, but stays silent.
“Said if Mike didn’t jump he’d cut me. And I begged him not to.”
Dustin palms at his eyes, trying to stave off the tears that threaten to spill over like waterfalls into the drained quarry.
“Asshole didn’t listen."
