Summary
Eddie has always been a runner.
Fuck, he’s good at it, too.
In elementary school, when the kids playing soccer would chase after him, the teachers would sit by and do nothing when they caught him because boys will be boys. In middle school, when those same kids spat at his feet and called him trailer trash and Eddie couldn’t help but snarl something back, and he’d be running then, too. In high school, he ran when his drug deals went sideways, or if Hargrove was just fucking on one and wanted to take it out on the freak.
He’s always been good at running. It’s kept him alive, kept him safe, mostly, and kept his stoner lungs from completely giving out on him. He’s always been slick, always been able to get away, always lucky. So much so that for a long time he questioned it. Questioned why he was always able to get away, questioned why he was able to avoid worse things happening when the universe clearly had it out for him.
Today though…Today his luck runs out.

Steve learns from an early age that when your birthday happens to be on Christmas it's easy to be forgotten, overshadowed by the festive lights and holiday traditions. It's fine. Steve accepted it years ago. It's not like he's going to stomp his feet and throw a tantrum demanding people to pay attention to him. Instead, he lies, tells everyone he has plans, and let's them celebrate Christmas the way they really want to. And it works.

But then Eddie saw a whole pile of kids get in Harrington’s car, and he overheard Nancy Wheeler say that “Steve was babysitting,” and that image didn’t even remotely align with anything Eddie knew about King Steve “The Hair” Harrington, but he figured he didn’t know much, anyway, and it wasn’t any of his business, when it came down to it.
Eddie thought so little of it, in fact, that he had almost forgotten that Max had apparently been babysat by one Steve Harrington. That is, until Steve Harrington started showing up at the trailer park, picking up Max and driving away, and then Eddie wouldn’t see Max at home again for days on end.
Eddie didn’t know much about babysitting, but he was pretty sure the gigs were more of an hourly thing.

The bartender winks at Steve when he slides his drink over, extra wedge of lime on top (which causes Steve to blush like a fucking virgin, and he hates himself for it). What is it about this guy that flusters him so easily? Maybe it's the effortless way he rules his domain behind the bar; confident and boisterous, his clever, dextrous fingers skimming the bottles as he pulls them from the shelves to mix drinks.
Steve’s distracted, watching him. The more he drinks, the more he stares.
The more Robin eyes him, warily.---
steve, robin, and a bucketload of unresolved tension walk into a bar (eddie and chrissy pine on the clock, gareth watches it unfold with minimal griping). everything stays unresolved until steve gets hit on, and eddie steps in as the world's best fake boyfriend <3
