Jing Yuan allowed Yanqing to cut the tomatoes with a knife, warning him to be careful and to not accidentally hurt fingers. The mentor’s concerns were waved off, and Yanqing had then proceeded to accidentally cut through the cutting board.
Jing Yuan’s laughter came out of his mouth almost immediately, bending over as he slapped his knee with his hand, tears in his eyes. Yanqing stared at the cutting board. “General, this means I’m super strong!”

The retainer stopped moving, under the rain. Chatter of other people filled the air, but he was silent, and unmoving. Caelus waited, patiently, watching the different emotions dance across the young swordsman’s face. Pain. Grief. Sadness. Hope. Relief.
“Do you think the General is proud of me?” Yanqing asked, voice so small. Caelus realised this, within an instant. Yanqing tried often so, so hard to be responsible and an adult. Perhaps, even to the point where he had almost forgotten to be a child.
