Summary
Forsaking Prussia and the empty life of a minor nobleman, Phillip Kohlesohn arrives in Texas hoping to earn a living on his own merits. When he calms a panicking horse on the Galveston docks, he gains the attention of ranch hand Clint Barton. Since Clint’s foreman is looking for more men, he offers to let Phil accompany him back to Eldorado and the Shield Ranch, a haven for misfits and outcasts, even though he has his doubts whether the European dandy knows what he’s getting himself into.
Watching Phil adapt to hunting for food, sleeping under the stars, extreme weather, and unfamiliar predators convinces Clint that he just might make a cowboy after all. But a corrupt marshal and a potential range war put their growing attraction—and their very lives—at risk.

Phil set his phone down on the table. “The gas was not harmless. It’s causing our… symptoms.” Phil still wasn’t looking at him, and anxiety dripped down the back of Clint’s neck, icy and alarming. But not even that did a damn thing to douse the heat still humming through his body.
“Okay. Sir, you’re scaring me here,” Clint said. “Are our dicks going to fall off or what?”
“No,” Phil replied quickly. “They said the gas should be out of our system in 24 hours. It’s from an old project SHIELD abandoned. It causes—” Phil paused, glancing to Clint and then away again— “well, whoever inhales it would be persistently, um—”
He struggled to find the words, which really cemented for Clint just how off-kilter Phil was. Phil always had the right words.
“Horny?” Clint supplied.
Phil let out a short, near-hysterical giggle.

Clint’s been attracted to Phil for years. He never thought anything would ever happen between them—until a mission to infiltrate a HYDRA lab leads to them inhaling a ‘stimulation-inducing agent.’ Forced to retreat to a SHIELD safehouse, they have no choice but to ride it out together.
