    The Winter Soldier was created to take the pain of the HYDRA's torture. He wasn't meant to stick around after James goes free, but he does.

    Winter, though, wants to learn. James told him that killing people was a wrong, but why? He told him that he was a monster, but how? What made him bad? Why was he evil if he protected James? If he took the pain from The Chair, if he took over so that James didn't have to kill people?

    At this point, Winter is more afraid of James - is more hurt by James - than James is of him. Winter is trying to learn, trying to grow, but he doesn't stand a chance when he's stuck in James' body. When he's stuck around people who can't stand him, people who think he'd go out and kill babies or worse if he was ever to go free.

    One morning, Bucky gets a surprise visit from one Stephen Strange with an offer to separate their mind, Bucky was on board. He wanted Winter to just go away and leave him alone as he tried to get back to a normal life with Stevie. But then he, Winter, gets his own body, is picked up by Tony Stark, and protected by the entirety of the rest of the compound, three of the four residential wings. So what now?

    Winter just wants love.

    Tony doesn’t hate Steve. Doesn’t hate any of them. Doesn't even come close.

    He only wishes he could.

    Wishes that, for once, he could hate someone as much as he’s always hated himself.

    As much as everyone else, with the few rare exceptions, have always seemed to hate him.

    At the very least he wishes he could just stop caring altogether.

    In this he would take the absence over the difference anyday.

    Warning for major 'Civil War' spoilers.

    Considering everything that happened, to Tony, it's incredible that T'Challa and Steve would think that he would help, in aiding Bucky.

    But then he hears a little about what Hydra did to Bucky, beyond merely using him as a weapon.

    Tony never told anyone the full extent of what they did to him, in that cave, in Afghanistan, although Rhodes clearly suspects the truth. It turns out, that he and James Buchanan Barnes have a fair amount in common, when it comes to how they have dealt (or rather not dealt) with their traumatic pasts.

    This fic starts as Stony (somewhat) but ends as Winteriron.

    James "Bucky" Barnes died in 1971 after twenty-six years of torture under HYDRA. The Winter Soldier is not Bucky Barnes, he doesn't even like Bucky Barnes. Steve Rogers doesn't understand this, and the idea that Steve wants to warp him into someone he doesn't really care for annoys the Soldier. He will kill him for the offenses against him, those against Natalia, and those against Tony Stark, because none of them deserve that.

    The story where the Winter Soldier is a bad influence, and Tony loves bad influences. Natalia and Rhodey are along for the ride, and for their idiot friends that are actually too brilliant for their own good.

    Note: There is some major character bashing, maybe. I'm not good at telling sometimes, but I really do not like certain characters and you will definitely know which ones they are.
