Daigo dropped his head to smother his laugh, eventually ending it with a pleased sigh. “Maybe. But this is how I want to treat…” his hand stopped circling his glass and made a vague motion between them. “I’m saying that I’m going to tell you the truth and I want you to do the same.”

If Daigo had known at the time, a few days ago in Survive bar, that opening up about his feelings just a little would be enough to lead him here, then he may have made some different choices. Not that he could say definitively what those choices would have been–at the moment he was cycling rapidly between either never opening his mouth to begin with or breaching the subject way sooner–but he distinctly felt that there were far better ways for this particular series of events to take place.

Sight wasn’t important right now; he needed to get up and that started with pushing himself up. The mask over his face—medical in nature, he could feel that much. Was he in hospital clothes? Daigo managed a strained rise of his right shoulder to get his hand near his face and shove the mask off. True ozone filled his lungs. He opened his eyes again, but could only manage the overstimulation of sight by opening one and half-squinting the other.
The voice of the wolf spoke again—a word he could identify, though in English.
“Die.”

She sees it again, now, the clarity in his gaze, no hidden tricks, no lies, just pure honesty. There is a slight smile on his face which she traces with her fingertip, his delicate wrinkles disappearing under her touch. His pupils dilate, darkness eating the colour almost completely. And it hits her with the same burning magnitude that in this moment he chooses something again.

His irises were in tiny slits that danced around to observe Daigo like a predator would its prey.
He had scales too. Beautiful, bright, shimmering, golden scales across his shoulders and his forearms, decorating his hairline and temples like an elegant crown. He almost blended into the environment, like the hotel had been perfectly built just for him to reign there. A king in his element. Daigo almost felt the need to kneel.
