Summary
Alec has spent most of his life hiding.
That's just the way things have always been. From a young age he knew he had to hide to keep himself safe, because there were people out there who would hurt him just for being born the way he was. To keep his secret, Alec has done his best to hide away the parts of himself he can't risk letting anyone see, only letting that part of himself out in the late night hours when no one's around and he can take to the skies. It's the only place he's ever felt free.
All that changes one night when Alec happens to misjudge a storm and finds himself crash landing on Magnus Bane's rooftop.

When Alec came back from Alicante, life had seemed to finally be looking up for him. No longer "Acting" Head of the Institute, all of his hard work had finally paid off. He was the youngest official, fully-vested Institute Head in the past 150 years. Something he'd worked damn hard to achieve.
So of course he should've expected for something to happen to change that.
With the introduction of Clary Fray into their lives, and all the chaos she brought with her, Alec came home to an Institute in upheaval. Unsanctioned missions, a search for the Cup, and Valentine's daughter running free. And his very first steps towards trying to fix it all - reaching out to the High Warlock they'd all managed to use for help somehow without paying him - ends with a whole lot more trouble than Clary could've ever brought him.
Alec goes on a journey that starts with pain and ends with a strange bond he never wanted, a husband he never thought he could have, and the chance to finally affect some real changes in the Shadow World.
That is, if they can all survive long enough to see it happen.

Things weren’t supposed to end like this.
That was the thought Alec couldn’t quite banish. It clung to him as he was dragged out of his own Institute with the cuffs around his wrists and his people watching on with looks that ranged from shock to horror, with a few here and there of glee. It repeated over and over in Alec’s mind through the night he spent in the Silent City with nothing but the dark and his memories to cling to.
And it was the thought he had now as he stared at Imogen Herondale and the Silent Brother who held the deruning device so calmly in his hands.
Faced with the end of his life and everything he'd ever been a part of, everything he'd ever known, Alec finds that maybe things aren't as over as he thought. They won't be the same, not ever again, but maybe with the help of someone he'd convinced himself he could never have, he can take what was done to him and make it into something even better. Something that, for the first time in his life, he can be proud of.

Even if some thought it a great honor in the beginning. that had clearly changed. Now, the only time Alec saw any hint of the peace that was said to once exist between the denizens of the shadow world was at events like these. One week, every five years, where all parties gathered together in a ritual as old as their race.
Alec had been interested, once, until he realized what it would mean. Giving up his life, his Institute, his family? A Guardian had to be prepared to let all of that go. Their life became the whim of their bonded and the War. Where their bonded went, they went. And with a lot of the new rules against Downworlders, that meant that there would be so many places a shadowhunter gave up ever seeing again. He couldn’t abandon his people like that.

Summary
No one could ever accuse life in the New York Institute of being dull.
After everything Alec went through during “Gabriel’s Gift” he hoped for the chance to get at least a small chance at peace. A little time to adjust to the major changes he’d gone through and figure out some sort of plan going forward. He didn’t expect it, but he’d hoped for it.
Unfortunately, life proved once again that it waited for no one. Alec and the others barely had time to adjust to all the recent changes before life threw itself at them again and reminded them all of what exactly was at stake here. There was a reason Alec had been brought back, after all, and it wasn’t one that was willing to wait quietly on the sidelines while he learned what it meant to be an angel.
Between learning what it means to be an angel, adjusting to his new powers, facing off against the latest evil, and meeting a couple new siblings he hadn’t quite planned for, life is more than a little chaotic. It’s going to take everyone for them to come up with some sort of plan. Hopefully, before it’s too late.

For the first time in a long time, things finally felt like they were going well. The shadow world had settled down after everything with Lilith and Jonathan, the Clave seemed to be making a turn for the better, and Alec’s life seemed to finally be on track. He had great friends, a better relationship with his parabatai, and a husband he loved more than life itself and who loved him in return.
He should’ve realized something would happen to mess that all up.
An attack during a routine patrol leaves Magnus caught in a magic no one understands, the life-force slowly draining out of him. They’ve exhausted every resource they have to try and save him. But after weeks and weeks with no cure in sight, and Magnus’ condition slowly worsening, those closest to him seem ready to give up.
All except Alec.
With all hope lost, Alec goes to one last group of people to try and help him save his husband’s life. But will the price they ask for prove to be too much for him to pay? Or will it be worth it to save the man he loves?

Alec had always sort of known it would be his fate to die young one day. All shadowhunters lived with that knowledge. They went out each night fighting against demons, never knowing if this night might be the night they were that split second too slow, the demon just a little bit faster.
Becoming Institute Head lessened that chance, but it didn’t take it away entirely. Alec still went out into the field, he still fought when the need was great. He put himself at risk over and over again against demons, and against those who sought to destroy the world that he and his family were working so hard to bring about.
Never once had Alec imagined that he’d die while sitting safely within the comforts of his office, drinking from a bottle gifted to him by a friend.
Nor had he expected that his death would somehow prove to be only the beginning.
