Summary
Mac can smell Charlie from down the street, the overwhelming wave usually so slight he could barely catch it now heavy enough it felt like he could swim through it. Mowed grass and hot Philly pavement in the summer, the soapy vegetal scent of mildew that Mac secretly didn't mind clinging to Charlie's basement walls. Salt, warmth. He trips on his shoelaces the second he recognizes it, how powerful it is, what the frantic phone call he got ten minutes before must've meant.

Part II - The Repentance Series
Two weeks after Mac and Charlie rekindle their relationship in Bonnie’s basement, they decide to figure out how to be intimate again.

“Promise.”
“Huh?”
“Promise you won’t break up with me, dick.”
Mac sighs. With the little agility he has, he rolls Charlie onto his back, clambering on top of him. He pushes Charlie’s wrists into the mattress, knees either side of his hips as he looks down at him with a deadpan.
“You’re an idiot,” Mac tuts. “I promise, okay? I mean think about it. Who else is gonna love an asshole like me? Nobody else is stupid enough.”
“Right. Yeah,” he says quietly. “You’re right… You are an asshole.”
Mac nods with a satisfied little smile, rubbing his thumbs against the inside of Charlie’s wrists gently. “‘Course I am,” he replies.
