But it never came, because when Shen Jiu managed to look up, all he could see was a man’s broad back swathed in black robes, his grip tight around Qiu Jianluo’s wrist.
“Qiu-gongzi, what could ever make you think that a charlatan like me wouldn’t want this boy as his disciple?”

It was easy to see the way the gang babied him, how he was the only one Dally would be soft with, a fact made even more true after Jonny was jumped. As afterwards each member of the gang found themselves easily swayed to monitor and protect him whenever they hung out. And if you asked anyone else, they might say Johnny too, if only to save face, since it wasn't hard to admit they all had a soft spot for him. But in reality, there was one other member that could have any of the gang dropping everything if he really needed it, and that would be Ponyboy himself. He was the youngest, and greasers protected their own, the baby most of all.
