Her sister Daphne, with all the surety of someone unaccustomed to dissension from among her audience, frequently declared that such shopping was a joyous experience.
Daphne, Ariadne found herself reflecting not infrequently, had clearly never attempted to shop for Hercule Poirot.
Or, Ariadne Oliver is better at crime solving than Christmas shopping, and George finally gets his own wireless.

Summary
Lt. Arthur Hastings, wounded in both body and spirit, just wants to get to the military hospital in London and finally start putting the horrors of the trenches behind him. Matters are complicated when the train carrying Hastings and a group of other wounded soldiers breaks down at a small village in the Surrey countryside. But this particular station stop may be just what the doctor ordered, for in this particular village a spring fair is taking place that day. And one of the vendors is a little girl who believes that her grandmother's gingerbread recipe can cure a variety of ailments, including weary spirits.
