“Enigmatic?” Shōta repeats.
“Yeah. Would you rather a different adjective?” Yamada asks. “How about elusive? Mysterious. Ominous.” He pauses. “Spooky?”
Shōta raises an eyebrow.
“Hey! These are all great things,” Yamada defends. “Also, abrasive, a little, but—”
Shōta turns away, having had enough of this character assassination from a rising pop star.
“Hey! I love abrasiveness!” Yamada shouts after him.
Shōta pauses and turns around. Yamada grins and shoots him a finger gun. Shōta readjusts his bag on his shoulder and says, “Loud, showy, kitschy, irritating.”
Yamada’s smile doesn’t falter.- - -
After the death of his best friend, Shōta struggles to find a reason to keep going, both in his artistic practice and in his life. On a whim, he takes a job as a concert photographer for Present Mic, and several months of sharing a tour bus with Yamada Hizashi might be the thing to help him recover.

Shouta didn’t know whether it was the drinking, the lingering guilt, or the way Yamada’s mouth was slightly pulled down at the corners, but he suddenly felt convinced that he was going to be the one to solve his problems.
"Mic," he said abruptly. "What are you doing on Sunday?"
"Huh?" Yamada stumbled a little as he jerked in surprise at this sudden shattering of the silence. "I've got a guest appearance on an early morning radio show, but nothing after that. Why?"
Shouta sighed, already regretting his next words. "Keep the day free. I'm going to take you somewhere."
When Yamada turns up to work one morning looking uncharacteristically miserable, Shouta decides to take matters into his own hands and figure out a way to cheer him up. In a bid to be a better friend, he arranges for them to spend more time together - and while Shouta is busy worrying about Yamada's emotions, his own feelings begin to change, too.

It’s so…peaceful. Tranquil. This is exactly what he needed.
He knows that the house needs work. The roof before anything else needs to be repaired before it rains - and this region is known for rain falling in the middle of the summer - and the windows need to be replaced. The foundation should be double checked to make sure none of the supports are rotting. He knows he spotted some loose and broken floorboards inside, and he doesn’t even know if he has running water or electricity.
But it’s his and away from everyone he knows.
Shouta feels safe for the first time in much, much too long.

Needing to get away from his past, Shouta buys up a little, run-down home in the mountains far away from the big city. He's not expecting to meet Hizashi, a man with a big garden and bright smile. He surprises himself when they become friends.

Hizashi stares at the page for a long while after that, contemplating the words he’s just read. There are still tears that drip down his cheeks, slower now, and occasionally a quiet hiccup will shudder his chest. Everything is quiet in the house; his foster parents don’t seem to have realized he’s hidden himself away just yet.
Eventually, his fingers trail over to the directions of the spell itself. It seems simple enough. Concentration. Reciting words. Pressing hands to the chest in question. He can certainly do that.

It's one thing after another that just keeps piling up on Hizashi, and when he chances upon a way to cut out his heart - a way to remove his emotions so he no longer has to feel - he takes it.
Years later, he and Shouta find each other again.
