Summary
He closed his eyes, basking in the dim lights of the house. Apathy had him in its chokehold for a good while now. It was over for him from the very first day.
Back turned to the door, he heard hounds' howls getting louder and louder, barks of a hunt well done flowing freely through the streets of the village. He knew no one would dare to stop the hunter.
The loud thumping of horse hooves. Hounds’ yowls just outside the house. A bitter smile appeared on his face.
Hurried footsteps. The door opened in a wide swing, almost torn off the hinges by the sheer force of the movement.
He didn't need to turn around to know who was standing behind him. He was aware from the start.
"So," his voice was croaky, no longer carrying the soft tones and melodic hints. "Your hounds finally picked up on my trail, huh?"
The person didn't answer. He chuckled.
It was hollow. Resigned.
"Your Royal Hunt is over. You found me. You won."
