“We’re going to turn right at the next light,” he instructs.
There’s a certain intonation in his voice she hasn’t heard in a while. It takes her back to being seven, holding her knife with a weak wrist but all the conviction her little body could muster. To the late nights in the arena when he’d spar with her for real. She rarely won, but that was okay. If it was hard, that meant he was actually trying.
“We?” she stammers.
“Well, you’re not gonna learn if I do it for you.”

Summary
Annabeth was no stranger to bad days.
They came less often now, her new life in New Rome offering a sense of peace she had never known before. Still, the years of fear and heartache had permeated her soul, like an ink stain on a white page — Stygian tendrils that winded their way around her heart.
She had made a promise to herself months ago that she would do the best she could to try and lighten that stain, whatever it took. Her friends, the California sun, and her classes had done a lot to take her mind off the bad memories. Percy continued to be her rock, and their relationship had given her a look into the future she had always wanted, something permanent, something that felt like home.
Still, she had bad days. Days where that inkblot bled into the corners of her vision and weighed down her limbs. Sometimes all it took was a spilled cup of coffee to spur her anger, other days her thoughts were cacophonous, a strangled symphony of doubt and self-hatred.
The only thing that cleared the darkness on those days was the warmth of Percy’s company.

If someone had told him even a week ago that he and Annabeth would be able to sit next to each other for longer than five minutes without bickering, he would have never been able to believe it. He hated thinking about how much time they wasted, how much they left unsaid between them this past year. And he knew that, while things felt good between them for the first time in a long time, there was still a lot for them to talk about.
