It’s not like Mike wanted to be put into witness protection.
Just because he’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessed an apparent assassination attempt on the district attorney of New York didn’t mean his life was at risk, too. Just because he’d been called to testify at the trial a month later didn’t mean the sniper’s buddies would target him, too.
Except then they did, and then he was, indeed, almost collateral damage.

Mike gets pushed into witness protection, looked after by guards employed by Pearson Security. But some of the guards are fucking assholes, so this is going to be a long goddamn month.

Summary
Charles has spent the majority of the last years alone. After running away from his home at the age of thirteen – an empty, broken home smelling of nothing more than alcohol and dust – he’s largely been able to get by alone. He’s joined up with the occasional caravan, stayed in a town once or twice long enough to be familiar with names, but those never lasted long enough. A few weeks, a month or two at most, and he’d be gone. He moves faster on his own, shoots quicker without distractions; he doesn’t need a shadow behind him, let alone twenty.
And yet.

Travelling on the mountains, Charles Smith hears two men being attacked by wolves and figures the least he can do is save their lives. They repay him by offering him a place in their gang.

Arthur belongs to an entire world independent of the camp. Charles realizes he's had the wrong measure of this man all along. He also recognizes a losing battle when he sees one.
Sort of fits in the same universe as Kin to the Roving Wind thematically, but you don't need to read that to get this.

Charles parts his lips just a moment and Arthur goes limp. It ain't right. Charles ain’t kissing back. Arthur opens his eyes and Charles’ are blown wide. His lips ain’t parted in invitation, but surprise. Arthur’s an idiot. Got this all wrong.
“Forgive me.”
Charles is looking at Arthur, taking in his pale pink face and his petal thin skin. The dark circles around his bloodshot eyes. Charles huffs softly, and his lips pick up in the most infinitesimal smile. His gaze drops to Arthur’s lips.
He’s gonna kiss me.
“No.” Arthur jerks away. Not like this.Charles pities him. Gonna give him what he wants because he’s a damned man. Give a dying man an IOU; he ain’t gonna ever collect. But Arthur ain’t dead yet. He’d have to live knowing he weren’t really wanted. Loved, sure, but not the way Arthur aches to be loved.
Just once in his life.

Vague-edged and shadow-cast against the pale ice of the lake’s far bank stand a wolf and a buck. Skirting the frozen water’s edge they circle one another — not in the pursuit of predator and prey, but an eclipsing dance of equal footing — before coming to a standstill as if preparing to duel, the pinprick black of them like staring down the muzzle of a gun. At this distance, their eyes are lost in their shaded forms, but something glints in the lens, and Arthur gets a strange feeling in the hair on the back of his neck that he’s being watched.
Later, Arthur will remember the buck and the wolf on the lake’s shore, and let himself hope.
