Mycroft believes Watson is beneath Holmes, he is too plain, too dull, too slow to be of any real worth. Holmes sets out to prove him wrong.

    Summary

Many circumstances of the events at the Reichenbach Falls could not be mentioned in Dr. Watson's published stories. Moriarty made attempts on Watson's life, and the main reason Holmes disappeared was to keep his life partner safe. Believing Holmes to be dead, Watson could not cope. His behaviour became downright self-destructive. A month later Holmes learned about that and found a way to let Watson know. From that point on, John was waiting for Sherlock for three long years.

    Summary

I scowled, annoyed as usual by Holmes's intrusion on my privacy. I was afraid that some day he might read something more telling, something more dangerous, and that in uncovering the truth he would ruin our intimate friendship for good. "I’m not exactly feeling up to scratch this morning, Holmes."

"And yet your eyebrows continue their semaphore."

Christmas Eve day. Come mid-morning, Holmes and Watson find themselves with three gifts, two cases, and one mild hangover. If they're lucky, they won't be additionally burdened with a partridge in a pear tree—though with the direction everything is heading, Watson wouldn't bet against it.

It is my custom, you may have noticed, to save those little cases which we have solved until such time as danger to those involved has passed, or until Holmes otherwise suggests I may write about them.

The happenings at Hurlstone Hall, however, received a very different treatment indeed.
