Eddie thought wearing a bulletproof vest would protect him.
It’s designed to cover his chest, to prevent any real damage from happening to him. It completely shelters his heart, so no bullet can penetrate such a vital organ and shatter it into pieces.
At least, it’s supposed to.
It doesn’t.
A sharp crack, a violent whizzing sound, and suddenly Eddie’s ears are ringing.
Time seems to slow down around him as he staggers backwards, almost as if he’s been shoved back by an unseen force.

The hysterical laughter stole every coherent thought from Buck and crawled into his bones; his heart thudded and he stared at the doll in disbelief. Then, as suddenly as it had started, the laughter stopped; leaving an eerie silence. Buck stood frozen, his thoughts like thick mud, staring at that stupid doll.

Summary
“You’re not my dad Buck so stop acting like it!,” Chris yelled, chest heaving at the admission.
Buck felt his whole life flash before his eyes before he corrected his posture, stance tall, shoulders back, face neutral.
“You’re right, I’m not your dad, but I’m still in charge of you until he gets home. He said you weren’t allowed to go to the party on a school night, and I passed along the message. If you have a problem with it, take it up with him when he gets home in twenty minutes,” Buck said calmly, leaving Chris’s room, closing the door behind him.
Or. Buck gets into an argument with Chris and flees to visit Bobby’s grave. Eddie follows him to bring the man that he loves back home.

Pain stopped being something that happened to Buck.It became a state.
At some point — he couldn’t tell when — his body stopped reacting the way it used to. The sharp edges dulled. The flinching disappeared. His muscles still screamed when the weight pulled on his shoulders, when circulation cut off and returned in burning waves, but his mind no longer followed the signals all the way through.
