His therapist would say that ‘relationships aren’t chess games you can plan down to the last attack or countermeasure’. That he should ‘just communicate’ with his partner when he’s experiencing doubt, instead of ‘prematurely ascribing blame and jumping to baseless conclusions’.
And Eddie would nod along and dutifully summarize her advice in point form in his therapy journal. And then, he would calmly close that journal and open another journal with a blocky header scratched so deep into the paper that it’s almost torn, and that header would read: “REASONS WHY RICHIE IS BEING FUCKING WEIRD AND DEFINITELY KEEPING SECRETS (UNSHAKEABLE PROOF)”. And there would be, let’s just say, more than a few pages filled in. Margins and all.

“I'm just gonna take a look-see first. Open wide." Eddie does, and Richie angles the light above to shine onto him. He tugs Eddie's lower lip slightly downwards, runs a gloved finger over his bottom row of teeth, and something in Eddie's gut seizes up. Oh, he's in trouble. What the hell is he doing here?

Through the office rumor mill Richie learns that Eddie has a mortgage on a house he doesn't live in, a frequently used membership in the gym on the fourth floor, and an ongoing divorce that keeps him tightly glued to his cell phone, constantly whispering, "We said we'd only talk via the mediator. No, Myra, only via the mediator," through gritted teeth, pacing in his office whenever Richie happens to pass by after his lunch break.
Richie has a Playstation 3 that only works when leaned slightly to the side, propped up with a broken mug he made taking a drunken pottery class with Bev. So they're on slightly different life paths.

Unsure of herself, Connie moved to wipe her fingers on the hem of her t-shirt, only to stop short when Daryl shook his head and signed, “No, sorry, I’ll leave, sorry.” His eyes kept shifting about, uncomfortable, and Connie felt horrible that all she could do was stare at his thick fingers, her mind lingering on the sinful thoughts she had only minutes before. Daryl had strong, handsome hands. She wanted those fingers in her mouth.
Hands shaking, core aching, Connie signed, “Please.” She half regretted the movement of her flat hand against her chest as her fingers grazed her bare nipples beneath her shirt. Connie swallowed and continued, aware of the way Daryl was watching her with his dark eyes. “Stay.”
Daryl glanced at her hands, as though he didn’t quite believe the words she was signing, before signing back, “You sure?”

Mr. Kaspbrak is hunched over in the corner of the hallway, speaking softly into the phone pressed to his ear. “I wish you were here, ” he says, his next words punctuated by pauses as the person at the other end speaks. “Yeah, she’s here. You asked her to come see me, didn’t you? Uh hu. I know. Okay, yeah. Okay. I love you.”
As she watches this, she wonders who the woman is, that was going to marry him, because his right ring finger glints with a gold band, and she had seen the post-its on magazines for cakes and suits and and flowers on his office desk. And sometimes during a meeting she caught him twisting the ring with his thumb. Who, she thought, made him so gooey, and happy, and made his voice sound that way, and his cheeks and nose dusted with a ruddy, pleased pink?
