Eric Edwards knew he didn't need any friends. He had his family: his brother Jacob and his brother's best friend Nolan. He also knew he wouldn't let anyone hurt them or get in the way of their success. Being in HYDRA made that part both easier and harder. Eric knew he was smarter than everyone there, but as a trainee for both SHIELD and HYDRA, he was under the instruction of both Head Strucker and Head Whitehall in the experimental units of HYDRA.
