Sophie stared into his eyes expectantly. “Now will you tell me who you are?” She asked between shivers.
He smiled, heart full of her. “Who I am… isn’t really important. You, however, are you okay?”
“I’m… fine, somehow. But where did you come from? I don’t recognize you from the ship, and no one could’ve been out there in the middle of the ocean, or swam us back so quickly.”
Keefe flicked his tail upwards out of the surf, figuring that was the easiest explanation.
She gasped, reaching out a hand to feel his fins against her skin. He marveled at her touch, at the lack of horror in her eyes, at the awe in her face.
“I’ve always known you were real. I’ve seen you once or twice before, you know. By those rocks. Only fleeting glimpses, but I knew you were there.” She rubbed his flipper between her fingertips.
