Summary
The sound of rapid knocking at her window made Rumi startle so badly she hit her knees on the bottom of her steering wheel, her hip somehow knocking into the gearshift and her wrist banging against the door. She hissed in pain, hearing a muffled “Oh, god, sorry!” and winding down the window.
Instead of the serial killer she’d been at least partially anticipating, the rolling of the window exposed wide, apologetic eyes, a bright brown with little flecks of golden warmth in the irises, black hair rolled up into a messy bun. “Hey, hi, so sorry, didn’t mean to scare you — just, any idea how long — god, it’s cold—” the woman shivered bodily, large, soft shapeless snow falling in clumps and sticking to her hair and, for some ungodly reason, bare arms “—the road closure will take? My radio doesn’t work and it looks like we’re in a 5G wasteland.”
“Why are you not wearing a sweater?” was the first thing that came out of Rumi’s mouth, which wasn’t the answer to the woman’s question that she was pretty sure she did actually know — somewhere deep down in her brain that wasn’t stuck on the outrageous statement on her t-shirt or the pretty bow of her lips.

“The fans are eating up you being a romantic,” Rumi informs her with a smile. “They think it’s cute.”
Mira frowns, pausing her scratching under Derpy's chin (he does not seem to mind. Or notice. Honestly, Mira's not exactly sure if the tiger is even aware that he's alive, sometimes…). “I’m not supposed to be cute. Zoey is cute-”
“Aw, thank you!”
“-you are cute, puppies are cute, Derpy is cute.”
“Mira you’re very, very cute,” Zoey disagrees loudly from where she’s poking at a pot on the stove.
“No, I- ugh. Whatever, not the point. Why did you two say that, anyway, about me being some closet romantic?”
Rumi blinks at her. “Because… you are?”
“I am not- when have you ever seen me fawn over someone opening a door?” Mira scoffs, resuming her ministrations on their fluffy visitor.
“Never, but-”
"So why did you do that? Now people think I'm some swooning idiot."
“Right, no- Mira, I meant that you like to do those things.”
“Duh,” Zoey calls helpfully from the kitchen.In which Mira decides to sweep Rumi and Zoey off their feet, and Rumi and Zoey are too stupid (affectionate) to realize it.

Summary
Mira Katadoski arrives at the Huntrix Inc. gala already irritated - forced to hand over the keys to her beloved 1961 Jaguar and thrown into a room full of polished smiles and silent agendas.
Then she sees Rumi Kang -bored, breathtaking, and clearly over it. Their eyes meet and a short exchange later, Mira’s impulsive offer to ditch the party becomes something more than a joke. It’s a lifeline.
Rumi should say no. She’s watched, expected, owned. But Mira’s concern is real, her grin reckless, and her car fast enough to outrun everything Rumi’s been trying to escape.
