And if it’s taking this long, surely it must be going well for once. Maybe he’ll have finally some money when he gets home.
If that weirdo guy who kept insisting he was ‘Anthony’ actually pays him, anyway. Or he doesn’t blow it all on junk-food the second he gets home.
But when she yanks open the front door, lungs burning and legs ready to drop her, and finds a dark silhouette sat by the window, haloed only by the thick light of streetlights filtering through the dirty windows... Patty immediately knows something is wrong.

Arthur does. "Or I one who could be so stupid!" Merlin stops. Arthur's so close he can sense the heat of Arthur's tension-strung body. "Tell me, Merlin, do you know how to walk on your knees?"
There is… something he'd like to do before he leaves Camelot. Perhaps the Goddess will have the privilege to grin maniacally and point at him saying he proved her right, that he can't escape his destiny, and every choice he makes will lead him back to Arthur. But that's far from the truth. He's a free man now, and every step he takes is based on his feelings alone, unrestrained from the shackles of divine beings and centuries old premonitions. And he's always, always, wanted to put Arthur in his place. Now he can.
Merlin straightens his posture, rising to full height. Now he will.
He looks back and smirks, his chest nearly touching Arthur's.
"Do you?"
Hopeless after Arthur's death, Merlin is sent back in time to when Arthur and him first met. Things don't turn out as innocently as before.

Arthur's eyes widen minutely, and Merlin can see fists tighten by his side, but he doesn't move out of Merlin's grasp, doesn't show any other reaction. And Merlin has never touched Arthur like this, never so unkindly but he's reached a boiling point, the thought of carrying on with this thankless routine is agonising.
His voice is almost a whisper when he speaks next. He leans in closer, unable to look at Arthur anymore, instead he says his next words a breath away from his ear. "You could thank me on your knees and it wouldn't come anywhere close to adequate appreciation."

In which Merlin is overwhelmed and underappreciated. Stretched thin between keeping the kingdom safe, playing the role of Arthur’s servant as well as the role of Gaius’ apprentice, and dealing with his magic, he snaps and quits. Arthur, of course, begins to realise the emptiness of life without Merlin. What follows is a mix of frustration, hurt, pining, and, finally, a reunion. Featuring the ever tired and concerned knights of the round table (except Gwaine, he doesn’t really give a shit.)

"Once this over, sorcerer...I’ll burn you."
"You’ve already tried that," Merlin’s voice answered and Arthur had to bite his fist to keep from making any noise. “You need to accept you can’t kill me… Hand me that blanket, please.”
“I’m sure there must be some method… Beheading?”
“No, we tried that.”
“Hanging?”
“I just sort of... Swung there, remember?”
There was another pause.
“I should have made you keep that dragon below the castle so I could feed you to it.”
“Kilgharrah? He won’t eat me, but if you want to torture me than making me listen to his nonsense for an hour might do it.” Merlin said and there was a soft sigh from the other end of the room. “I’m glad you agreed to help me though. Usually I have to do the grunt work of saving Arthur myself.”
“I can’t wait to kill you.”
Or
Uther finds out about Merlin’s magic, but can’t seem to kill him. Merlin is just trying to protect Arthur. They become a begrudgingly effective duo. Arthur doesn't understand why they think he isn't noticing this.

Merlin has quite a lot of scars and has done quite a lot of bumps, Arthur has never seen his scars but he’s there for most of the bumps - he’s even caused some. So why is the way he found out from Merlin’s incompetence and falling straight into his table?

It was easy enough to forget how Merlin's eyes had glowed when he'd made wet wood burst into flame. It was small moment, after all. It wasn’t as if Arthur had noticed anything else.
Arthur, very quickly, began to notice a lot more.
(Arthur realizes a lot of coincidences happen around Merlin. More specifically, magical ones. He bends over backwards to justify them, and he finds himself falling into accepting magic, as well as maybe accepting that he's in love. Not that he'll ever admit it.)

House stays seated, rolling his cane between his palms. He tries to think of a response, but nothing comes. Eventually, House stands, heavily leaning on the cane, but before he moves away a hand reaches down and ruffles his long shaggy hair. Then not even a moment later a second blanket drops on top of him from Wilson. He blinks a few times and then he lets sleep claim him.
Or Five Times that House and Chase have a father-son moment and One time Chase calls House his dad
