The prickling heat was worsening with each second, the air stifling and impossible to breathe through. Ilya opened up his hidden folder, the one he’d never admitted to having, and sobbed the moment Shane’s face smiled up at him. He spared a glance out the window and saw green and brown terrain rapidly approaching and fuck, he was going to throw up or pass out if he looked, so he looked back at the picture, breathing through his panic until a shaky smile landed on his face, his tears drying on his cheeks from the heat. A dull sense of calm settled over him even as each breath burned his lungs and his ears had long stopped processing sound from the screeching and alarms and screaming. Shane, he thought as he stared at the picture, running his thumb over the curves of Shane’s mouth, over the freckles bridging his cheekbones, over the temples he’d pressed kisses against more times than he could count. I love you.

Over Ilya’s shoulder, Shane sees the doctor and Wiebe give each other a look, and in a sudden bout of impatient anxiety, Shane ends up saying the words that come to ruin everything.

The effect is instantaneous. Ilya’s hands fly to his sides, and Shane gets a front row seat as Ilya’s heart breaks before his very eyes. Eyes dimming and lips trembling in slow, painful technicolor.

Ilya climbed back onto the bed, the mattress sinking under his weight, and slotted himself between Shane’s legs with the naturalness of someone who belonged in that space. His hands found the Canadian’s thighs, pulling him closer.
“And…” Shane tried to shift focus from his own fright, his mind still processing the last two minutes. “Have I mentioned how sexy you sound speaking Russian?”
Ilya tilted his head, a slow half-smile spreading across his face. The blue of his eyes darkened a shade.
“Oh, yeah?”

In Ottawa, Ilya wakes up with broken bones, a serious concussion, and a neatly edited brain. The months where he was lonely and depressed and fighting with Shane? Gone. He’s mentally living in the soft, hopeful beginning of things—and the more everyone tiptoes around him, the more wrong it feels.
The Centaurs step up. The Hollanders dig in. Shane tries to convince himself that “temporary amnesia” is not the same thing as losing him.
