Summary
“The results are in, and… you don’t seem to have gills,” David says. He sounds oddly disappointed by that, though Simon can’t even begin to fathom why.
Or: Simon's thoughts and relationships as he adjusts to his new normal.
A continuation of my other story Thicker Than Water (which you will want to read first for context)

Summary
Ava wants to reach out and touch his hand, touch the sapling, touch his shoulder, feel anything to prove that she isn’t alone and that she’s still a good woman, somehow, that she’s still human, but it’s far too late for that and she knows it.
“Your nose is bleeding,” she whispers stupidly, because it’s all she can think to say, and to say anything else would feel cruel.
—
Ava lives, if barely, if inexplicably. Whatever is left of Simon down in the depths just might have lived, too.
They both find themselves thinking of one another.Bookmarked by SnackHouse

Summary
“So then why?” Simon demands. “Why am I still in here?”
Ava doesn’t even bother reprimanding him for interrupting again. She takes a deep breath as if steeling herself for what she’s about to say. “We tried to pull you out.”
Simon’s heart freezes. “W-What?”
“We tried to pull you out,” Ava repeats, the words shaky and uncertain for once. “And we couldn’t."

Summary
He focuses on her voice over the pain and rapidly dwindling oxygen. It sounds like she’s walking as she speaks—he can hear her footsteps. She says he’s earned his freedom. More than that, he’s a hero. She tells him it’s a good day: for humanity, for him. He wants to believe her.
The footsteps stop. A moment of silence, and then—“Why isn’t he out yet?”
OR
Simon gets the data. True her word, Ava pulls him out. It’s not necessarily over after that.
