Summary
Lakan has no earthly idea what possessed him to come to the garden party, but some star smiled upon him indeed. There is but one living face in the world for Lakan to see and, though she has grown greatly since last he saw her, there is no mistaking his daughter sitting behind the honored consort. It nearly breaks his heart just to see her: in formal garb she looks every inch her mother’s daughter, down to the cunning expression on her face. She looks into her bowl as her mother would look at a gaming table, seeing many moves into the future. So he is not surprised when she announces the meal is poisoned, for he was already out of his chair when she decided to drink it.
How would the story change if Lakan had attended the spring party and seen his daughter in the Rear Palace? How does his persistence change Maomao's view of herself, the world, and her place in it? A story in which Jinshi is not as subtle as he thinks he is, but that's okay because Maomao would rather drink poison than commit a single moment's self-reflection.

Summary
Maomao is given as a concubine to the Moon Prince in an attempt to control Lakan. Jinshi is against the idea of trapping a young woman in the rear palace for her father’s poor attitude and tries his best to accommodate her as both the palace manager and as the Moon Prince. But as time drags on, he falls in love with his odd concubine and his double life poses many issues.
Maomao never expected to be part of palace life and finds it rather difficult to adapt to. That being said, she loves the new access to overflowing ingredients the palace offers, especially the extremely rare ones the Moon Prince has taken to giving her as presents. If only the meddlesome eunuch would leave her alone, he’s making things far too complicated for her liking.
(Mostly follows canon, but with Maomao as the Imperial Brother’s concubine)

It’s hard to believe in love when you grow up in the pleasure district. Maomao grew up knowing love as something transactional, and when someone forgot that all they got was ruin. The dead woman living in the Verdigris annex was proof of that, so forgive her if she didn’t want to be part of the life of the man who carelessly ruined her.
Unfortunately, she hadn’t even gotten back from her first party as a courtesan when her birth father had already bought out her contract. “I’m taking you home”, like she was supposed to be happy about that. Worse than having to protect her body, she has to protect her heart. Maomao refused to end up like her foolish mother.
Aka: Maomao heals her daddy issues and everyone is better off for it: the fic.

But the one thing she did remember from her several few ordeals with him so far in his new form, was the strange attitude shift, and the fact that he curiously, ran cold. Temperature wise. Temperament wise... everything, really, but specifically, to the touch. She clearly recalled the first time she'd gripped his hand, and he'd closed it around hers, and how the surprise had been only just glazing the shallow parts of her brain that oh, he was quite a few degrees colder than he'd been just a few moments ago, and wasn't that interesting?
